Hookah was invented by Abu'l-Fath Gilani, a Persian physician under the court of Emperor Akbar, in the Indian city of Fatehpur Sikri. More than 500 years ago traders from Yemen in West Asia also came to Koyilandy and some of them settled here. Hookah is an important product made out of Coconut Shell.

Ever since its creation, the Hookah has been a symbol of friendship, trust, respect, pleasure and relaxation. It has become an important sign of trust and withholding it could be taken as a serious insult.

Making Koyilandy Hookah is a long-drawn process. It is completely handmade and has five parts. The raw materials required to create Koyilandy Hookah are wax to create patterns, wood for the stem, coconut shell to hold water, two varieties of clay and a combination of metals to produce the bronze.

Koyilandy Hookah is famous for its intricate and royal aesthetics. Hookah is popular in the Middle East, Turkey and parts of Asia and Africa.

Modern Hookah pipes typically cost more than traditional Hookah pipes but the maintenance costs are much lower for the former. Like most traditional Hookahs are characterized by their handmade construction, most modern Hookah can be characterised by their machine-made design.
